A normal new born child reacts and can reach only according to the sound the child listens to. But how the newly born can listen to the sound if he or she is deaf, especially when some doctors say that it will be months or more before want can actually determine whether the new born is deaf or not.
Till then the burdens of communication with the child rests mainly with the parents. Learning Sign Language in an uncertain situation by parents is difficult to decide. It can, if found necessary happen only gradually so the situation poses challenge to the parents.
But once it is established that the child is deaf, no time should be lost on parents learning Sign Language and also in teaching the child Sign Language. Relying on short-cut methods will only be counter productive and the waste of time although they are helpful in day-to-day life at homes, but not beyond that.
